What is Compassionate Mind Training?

Do you ever experience that inner voice that often tells you that you are not good enough, not smart enough, not fit or good looking enough, whilst the rest of the world seem so much better than you? Or maybe that job interview didn’t go through and the inner voice is saying that you will never get it right, and so on…

Well, I have just introduced you to your “inner critic”, who may have been with you for a long time and maybe sometimes a voice we would prefer to silence.

At the Compassionate Mind Training Course we learn how to reduce self-criticism, to control the many negative emotions, such as anger, shame and anxiety, and to manage stress better.

Research has shown that Compassionate Mind Training improves self-compassion, well-being and positive emotions and at the same time lowers self-criticism and emotional distress, improves relationship with ourselves and others and enhances empathy.

The course was developed by Drs Chris Irons and Charlie Heriot-Maitland, drawing on compassion focused therapy, a comprehensive psychotherapy approach developed by Professor Paul Gilbert during the past 30 years of his research into Compassion Focused Therapy.

This 8-week programme can be followed by everyone as no previous experience is needed: anyone wanting to cultivate compassion in their professional or personal lives will benefit from this course.

It incorporates information sharing, practical tips and exercise, tools to bring compassion into one's daily life.

Once the course is started no new participants will be able to join.

The course is also particularly addressed to professionals working in mental health fields, doctors, nurses, carers, teachers and educators.

During the programme participants will learn about:

  • How our mind works and how negative emotions get us caught in endless rumination.

  • Noticing how stuck we may be in emotional imbalance and what to do to unblock ourselves.

  • Learning the true meaning of compassion and training our minds in it.

  • How to develop skills to reduce negative emotions and enhance the positive ones to become the best version of ourselves.

To achieve all of the above, participants will also learn:

  • How to use attention and awareness through an array of exercises to promote centring and grounding.

  • To focus on the breathing of the body to enhance the soothing of the mind.

  • How to develop skills to empower your Compassionate Mind to use emotions to support and help when faced with difficulties or feeling inadequate.

Why would I choose to do a course on Compassion?

  • Because I want to improve my wellbeing, experience a higher level of happiness and reduce my own self-criticism, anxiety and shame.

  • Because I am not particularly happy with some parts of myself and I want to create a better version of myself.

  • Because I may think I don’t deserve it, but I certainly need it.

  • Because the more compassionate I become with myself the more likely I will be to deal with difficulties in life, and take responsibility for my mistakes and failures.

Who is the trainer and how is the course delivered?
